Longwang is a striking two-storey laneway restaurant in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, for which Kris Kowalski Architects delivered the structural design and layout. The project is a Brisbane first: a fully custom-built dining venue inserted into what was once a narrow laneway between two high-rise buildings. Measuring just three metres wide yet extending thirty metres deep across both levels, the space demanded an inventive structural response to transform an overlooked sliver of the city into a functional, characterful destination. Our design accommodates a rich and varied program within the tight footprint — including a private dining area, a chef’s table, and an open-air bar with a distinctive curved frontage cantilevering above Edward Street. The result is a bold reimagining of underused urban space, proving how clever architecture and structural ingenuity can turn a constrained laneway site into one of the city’s most memorable venues.
