Gold Coast super tower will be the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere
A 108-storey ‘super tower’ is set to grace the Southport skyline, making it not only the tallest building in Australia but also the tallest in the entire Southern Hemisphere. This remarkable structure, known as the Imperial Square Stage 3 Tower, will redefine the concept of community living by incorporating its very own university.
Crafted by the visionary architects at Kris Kowalski Architects, the Imperial Square Stage 3 Tower will soar above the skyline with more floors than New York’s iconic Empire State Building, surpassing the recently-announced Orion Towers in Surfers Paradise as Australia’s tallest building. Even more impressively, it will outshine the current reigning champion of the Southern Hemisphere, Auckland’s 328-meter Sky Tower, designed by Craig Craig Moller (CCM) Architects.
Thanks to advancements in construction technology and techniques, the realization of towering structures has become increasingly feasible. Matt Schneider, Urbis’ director of planning, explains, “The Imperial Square Stage 3 Tower has been meticulously designed to seamlessly blend into the urban fabric, creating a harmonious integration with the vibrant city life. It encapsulates the essence of Gold Coast City while nurturing an urban habitat that thrives in human-scaled environments.”
This new architectural marvel will serve as the centerpiece of the Imperial Square development, also masterminded by Kris Kowalski. The development promises to be a self-sustaining community, offering a wide array of amenities, including a dedicated university, 2,200 luxurious apartments, a 200-room hotel, and 200 student accommodation rooms.
Nestled on the corner of Ferry Road and Meron Street in the heart of the CBD, the Imperial Square Stage 3 Tower will proudly stand atop a six-level podium, boasting an expansive 50,000 square meters of floor space. Rising above the podium will be three distinct towers, spanning 48, 68, and a staggering 108 levels.
Upon its completion, Imperial Square will transform into a self-contained suburb, encompassing various essential facilities such as a hospital, childcare center, library, church, shopping center, and gym. The overarching vision for this project is to establish an integrated complex that further solidifies the Gold Coast skyline as a globally recognized hub for international education and tourism.
Architect Kris Kowalski shares his enthusiasm for the venture, stating, “Drawing from our rich history of innovation, the design team at Azzura Investments Limited is committed to creating an integrated complex that not only enhances the Gold City skyline but also establishes it as a prominent global destination for education and tourism.”
The Imperial Square development is being executed in four stages, comprising a vertically-integrated education and accommodation complex. Stage 1, which received approval in December 2016, consists of a 20-level hotel with 210 rooms and a student accommodation complex with 420 rooms.
The Gold Coast City Council is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to cast their vote on the proposed tower later this year. If approved, this extraordinary architectural masterpiece will leave an indelible mark on the Southport landscape, cementing its position as a beacon of progress and innovation.
